Standard Shift transmission

Symptoms of a Standard shift transmission problem; noise with the clutch out, grinding when shifting into gear, shifter popping out of gear while driving, synchromesh oil leaking from the unit and not being able to put it into gear. To be sure please take your vehicle to our *shop for diagnosis.

Clutches are sometimes replaced when a manual transmission is in for repairs. The rear main engine oil seal at the back of the engine block is often changed as well. If the clutch system has an internal slave clutch cylinder changing it is sometimes recommended.

The trend in transmissions has moved away from the once common Standard shift transmissions. The belief was that stick shift transmissions would last longer and cost less to repair seemed to keep them around longer. Standard shift transmissions of the past gave the driver both better gas mileage and a sportier driving experience. European drivers preferred shifting gears as opposed to paying higher costs for operating fuel consuming vehicles with automatic transmissions. For the commuter looking for economy and less exposure in terms of repair cost standard shift transmissions are a reasonable option. Sports car enthusiasts make up a large percent stick shift users. Hyper-cars also offer standard shift transmissions two examples are the current version of the Corvette Stingray and the Alfa Romeo. Rev matching, paddle shifted automatic transmissions mimic the feel of a stick shift. The decision on wether to shift to an automatic or standard transmission becomes a personal choice.

The basics of Standard shift transmissions or transaxles (front wheel drive): They are mainly made up of a main shaft, counter shaft and gears. They have synchronizer rings, bearings, roller bearings and seals. Also shift rails, shift forks, synchromesh oil and idler gears.  Far less complicated than automatic transmissions.

Where and how you drove your vehicle is a big factor in making a decision to operate a stick shift transmission. High revving engines capable of 7,000 plus Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) give the stick shift driver control over the power band. Old school minded enthusiasts would tend to bring in their stick shift cars for preventative maintenance. Missing shifts and over powered engines would tend to cause gears, synchronizers and bearings to fail. Synchromesh oil leaks that went un-repaired would often cause a Standard shift transmissions to burn up.
