Transmission coolers come in many different types: Transmission coolers come in many shapes and sizes. Their purpose is to help a transmission cool better. Better cooling helps mechanical parts inside last longer. There are high efficiency small coolers. Large aluminum finned coolers, fan mounted types. Their design mimics that of a small radiator. Often they are installed in front of the radiator. High efficiency trans cooler with fan. Many years  ago a customer phoned after hours. I took the call and a friendly man named George wanted to discuss his transmission problem. He towed an Airstream Trailer. He and his wife were professional competitive Ball Room dancers. They traveled around the country to attend dance competitions. Traveling in a Chevy 1500 Silverado Pick Up Truck. George felt that towing his Airstream up and down mountains wore out transmissions. He asked, “can you build one that would stand up to the Airstream?” I said, “yes” so we towed in his truck. The transmission would not move the truck at all. With permission, we removed it and examined the burned parts. A technician ran a flow check through the trans cooler lines in the radiator. The lines were blocked. It was caused by heat and a lack of fluid changes. We told George the key to solving his problem. Rebuilding the transmission with a billet clutch drum. A wider brake band. Heavy duty clutches. A super-duty custom built Torque Converter Most of all a large external transmission cooler. Transmission coolers, his in particular needed to be separate from the radiator. We ran it in bypass. The cooling area was larger than the internal radiator cooler. The result was a stronger, cooler transmission. George later reported that the transmission cooler worked well, no more overheating. Transmission Overheating

Transmission Overheating Is far more common than one might think. Summer heat and the sun reflect light off the pavement increasing the internal temperature within the transmission. Transmission overheating can go undetected for some time. Transmission Overheating     Transmission overheating can be caused by a lack of fluid changes. Fluids can break down losing their effectiveness. Leaks can also contribute to this problem. People know just how important engine oil changes are.  An old TV commercial would say, “You can pay me now or you can pay me later.”  It showed  ruined engines and proof that more frequent oil changes would have helped prevent the problem. The same thing goes for transmissions and transaxles. They are filled with Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). ATF promotes better cooling, cleaning and lubrication. They also help reduce friction within the unit. Some automobile manufactures like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Toyota  require no or 100,000 miles trans service. We recommend more frequent flushes or pan services. The vehicle’s computer reads a transmission oil temperature sensor (tot). When the heat is excessive or the sensor melts the light will come or or set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). Keep in mind that vehicles such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Toyota or any Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) requires manufacture specific fluid. Aftermarket products such as BG Services products offer fluid that will work in most instances.  It is better to be safe than sorry however. Other factors that can  cause transmission overheating; bad or leaking radiator, radiator fan or fan relay. What we do: Perform routine transmission services at around 15,000 miles for a pan service. Perform a flush service at around 30,000 miles. Check the cooling system including hoses, belts and antifreeze frequently. Keep records and remind you when service is due.
